Scope and content
The preface is on ff 3-6. At folio 5, Baxter explains that the reason for a delay in his publication is that Theophilus Gale ‘fell sick of a Consumption; And believing him to be a truly honest & godly man (though sadly mistaking in this matter) I durst not publish it lest it should by grieving him increase his sickness: And since his death I neglected it, till the desires of many judicious men provoked me to leave it to their judgment, by which it now cometh abroad into the world’. The original Ms is much altered at the beginning and ff 13-16 use substituted leaves.

Theol are added in the beginning) & some pages in the end)’
  • f 3r: ‘To the partiall Reader who is forward to judge before he understandeth the cause’
