Publication note
  • For the Italian Jesuit and cardinal, Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621), see Corr 48, 397, 743A and ODCC.
  • For Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626), Bishop of Winchester, see ODNB and Corr 379, 1199. Andrewes’s Tortura Torti (1609) carried a title which punned Bellarmine’s pseudonym Matthaeus Tortus which he had used for his Responsio ad Librum (1608), part of the exchange of letters, concerning the authority of King James I of England. In Tortura Torti, Andrewes refuted papal supremacy and defended the king’s supremacy over the Church of England.
