Samuel Say Papers - Volume
1717-1795
1 volume containing 268 pasted-in items.
A folio ledger, in marbled paper covers, inscribed ‘Livre Capital no. A.’ and ‘Say MSS’, in a heart-shaped label on the front cover. Contains 267 numbered items. The ledger was used by a merchant to record certain cargoes to the port of Schiedam in The Netherlands, July – September 1717. The accounts are written in French, the merchant is unknown. Into this Samuel Say Toms pasted these papers, in a haphazard fashion which allows of little arrangement. His numbering of items has been followed in this catalgoue, though an item may be a note by S.S. Toms written directly on a page of the book. He pasted the items to both sides of pages, sometimes laying them down flat and copying the verso on an opposite page, frequently several items are attached to the same page.
