Title
The Masquerier Album
Scope and content
A large album, ff. 70, filled with letters, autographs, prints, etc., pasted down or otherwise affixed, some loose, collected by the artist John James Masquerier (1778-1855) and bequeathed by him to Henry Crabb Robinson. Some items are addressed to Masquerier's wife (who he married in 1812) Rachel (d. 1850), daughter of Duncan Forbes of Thainstone and widow of Robert Eden Scott (1770-1811), professor of Moral Philosophy at Aberdeen, the recipient of some of the letters. It is likely that the album was made up as now for Henry Crabb Robinson and that the papers were received by him loose, (see Diary for 24 Apr 1855). As material on facing pages show their compilation is determined by biographical connections the numbering at file level is designed to maintain this relationship i.e. verso and recto numbers are given as titles for openings. After Henry Crabb Robinson's death the album was given by his executors to Miss Grace Field, who entered an inscription to that effect inside the front board. It was presented to Dr Williams's Library in 1916 by Misses Mary, Susan, and Emily Field.
System of arrangement
Materials on facing pages are all associated by biographical connections.
